What the heck is a delegate? Here is our own fantastic Membership Specialist, Sarah McClure (sarah.mcclure@girlscoutsrv.org), on the subject:
Delegates are an important position in the service unit. Delegates can be any registered girl or adult member, provided that the girl is at least 12 years old by the date of the annual meeting, January 21, 2012. Below is a short description of the duties and requirements of delegates:
“Delegates are important members of their service unit teams. They essentially serve as the “voice” of their unit by attending the annual meeting and voting on proposed changes to the council’s bylaws, board representation, etc. This is a great way for girls and adults to participate in the democratic process and to satisfy an essential function of the council. Delegates must be elected by their units. Members can nominate themselves or others for this important role. Once elected, delegates will be asked to complete the delegate self study to provide an orientation to their delegate position. Additionally, River Valleys will host delegate kick-offs throughout our jurisdiction and via webinar in early January, prior to the annual meeting. These kick-offs will help to unite all River Valley delegates in preparing them for the priorities of the year.”
Please start considering whether you, your daughter or other girl members, or another adult you know would be a good fit for this position. Delegates will be discussed in more detail at the November leader meeting, and nominations will be taken. So come prepared to participate! Also, we strongly encourage new leaders to nominate themselves. The council wants participation from our entire membership base, and new leaders can bring fresh ideas and perspectives which are very valuable to us. It’s a relatively simple position with minimal time commitment, but an important way that you can start giving back to your unit.
